Who says tooth loss has to have the final say when it comes to having a healthy smile?

While it’s true that millions of American adults are missing at least one if not more permanent teeth, there are so many amazing options at our disposal to replace missing teeth. One of these options is dental implants. Of course, before deciding whether dental implants are right for you, talk with our Clayton, OH, dentist Dr. William Peterson to make sure that you understand all of your treatment options.

A Little About Dental Implants

To figure out whether a treatment is right for you, you first need to understand more about it and how it works. An implant is made up of three different parts,

  • A metal screw that’s about 8-16mm long
  • An abutment
  • A false tooth

The metal screw is the part that will replace your missing tooth roots. In order to do this, it will need to be surgically placed into the jawbone. Over time, the bone and implant will fuse together naturally. This process is known as osseointegration and it’s the reason that implants can last decades.

Once the implant and jawbone fuse together, the major part of your treatment is over. From there, an abutment is placed over the top of the implant to connect the metal screw with the false tooth. The final step is to cement the custom crown over the abutment. The length of treatment will vary depending on how many implants are placed and their location.
